Introduction

The design and control of Diesel engines have become more difficult with the introduction of strict regulations and demands, as well as with the increased complexity due to additional hardware adding more degrees of freedom available for control. The calibration of the control strategies of this kind of systems with multiple coupled actuators, could be very time consuming and difficult when using traditional open-loop or SISO control loops approaches. On the contrary, multi-variable control techniques allow to obtain a desirable behavior of systems with several output variables, by the simultaneous manipulation of several input variables. Among these techniques, the model predictive control (MPC) has been developed considerably over the last years.
