Operating in isolation from the main hydraulic circuits and is powered with the \u201cpower-by-wire\u201d concept.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electro-Mechanical Actuator (EMA) \u2013 This is a pure electric and mechanical device without hydraulics. It has its own servo-motor and is also operated using power-by-wire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The main hydraulic circuit may also be driven by an Electric Motor Pump (EMP) by the battery and Engine Driven Pump (EDP) by the engine shaft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This builds redundancy to ensure the aircraft can still be operated even if one or several systems are failing. The aircraft must maintain control of critical functions to maintain aerodynamic stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/modelon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/library-list-hydraulics.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12888\" style=\"width:249px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Modelon\u2019s Hydraulics Library contains all you need to assemble the complete actuator system<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-actuator-system-design-in-modelon-s-2024-2-release\">Actuator system design in Modelon&#8217;s 2024.2 release<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With the latest version of Hydraulics Library in Modelon Impact, users will find all the actuators pictured above available off-the-shelf. The actuators are designed in low fidelity, with simulation performance and ease of use as top priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actuators are meant to be used together to model part of or the complete aircraft actuation system. This approach targets questions like, \u201cWhat is the overall energy consumption of my design over a certain flight envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/modelon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/electric-motor-pump-image-1024x746.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12889\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>System model featuring Electric Motor Pumps (EMP), Engine Driven Pumps (EDP), and three different actuator types. During simulation, operation is switched from the EDP to the EMP.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As the actuators operate on the control surfaces, the force on the actuator also increases. The new models handle this with a simple representation of \u201cHinge Moment,\u201d essentially increasing force as the actuator extends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/modelon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/hinge-moment.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12890\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The prescribed hinge moment based on control surface deflection using transfer function.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-trade-offs-in-single-actuator-design-using-optimization\">Trade-offs in single actuator design using optimization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the low-fidelity approach, the actuators are also optimization-friendly. It is possible to compute how large the actuator must be without tampering on responsiveness. This trade-off is set using the objective integrand, and the solver then finds the minimum integral for this trajectory by adjusting the \u201cfree parameters\u201d of the user\u2019s choice. The free parameters could be geometric parameters of the hydraulic system components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/modelon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/template-model-hydraulics-library-1024x634.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12891\" style=\"width:890px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Using the existing template model available in the Hydraulics Library, users can set up an optimization problem. In this specific case, the cylinder area and actuator position feedback loop error are minimized, while accumulator and pipe geometry are free variables.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion-nbsp\">Conclusion&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The brand-new sub-set of components within Hydraulics Library, <em>ActuationSystem, <\/em>contains all you need to get started with actuator system design.
